| | | Nikon D40 SLR software Got the Nikon D40 because the reviews were good, camera was relatively cheap for an SLR and it is designed for the novice (hopefully ).
So far it has been easy to use and the pictures, now I have finally been able to download them - are really good.
Software is the problem. It came with Nikon Transfer and ViewNT. I have Vista Home Premium. I loaded the programs first from the CD - problems - Nikon sent the links for the programs so I downloaded the full versions from their website - same problems! Both programs say there are updates but fail when I try to load them. ViewNT crashes, freezes and sometimes fails to open. Nikon said to set the USB menu to MTP/PTP but on that setting the camera did not connect to the PC. Set on Mass storage it does. I have given up and uninstalled the Nikon software from my computer.
But, I have found a solution which might be of use to anyone who has similar problems. Forget the Nikon software, connect the camera to the computer via the USB and open Windows Gallery (which comes with Vista - not sure about XP though) - it will transfer the photos with no problems and even put them in a new folder for you.
At last I can view my photographs |

| | | Re: Nikon D40 SLR software Is a plug in card reader different to the card reader slot in a laptop? I used a Lexar SDHC 4GB card which I got cheap when I bought my point+shoot Kodak. I have had problems with the card before - the laptop doesn't read it unless it is in the camera. I have a plug in card reader somewhere - I will sort it out and try that - it would be easier than plugging the camera in.
I did format the card in the Nikon before I used it. I'll also try one of my smaller memory SD cards.
Thanks for the advice Big Bill | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
