| | | Re: gloss vs matt In my opinion some images look better matt.. and others gloss ...a lot of it's down to personal preference... although in my experience matt prints do cut down on glare and reflection... A good way of judging which you like best is to get a few favorite images and then get one of each type printed so that you can judge the merits of each type.. if you google online photo printing you will find that a few of the online places do special free or cheap intro offers so taht could be a good way of looking at the differences cheaply (or buying sample size matt and gloss papers for your printer if that is the way you are doing it!
Hope that helps |

| | | Re: gloss vs matt Well, presuming you know that main difference is gloss have a more shiny effect and matt a more dull finish , I find each type has some advantages. Ultimately the choice will come down to personal preference.
I mostly use matt as they are easier to handle without smudging, finger prints, etc. which is essential when my little girl gets hold of them! Also, matt doesn't seem to catch as many reflections if you are going to stick them up somewhere.
I have liked the more shiny effect of the gloss on a few pictures I've had printed though (when I did likes zail suggests with comparisons). For some reason they seem to be easier to see finer detail on. I sometimes feel like its harder to pick it up on the matt versions.
As mentioned, try both and see what you like |

| | | Re: gloss vs matt And then, just to add a bit of confusion - there is Semi Gloss. This half way option which gives a softer appearance can look good for some subjects. It is available in a wide range of sub options like smooth, classic photo or pearl finish, etc.
Trying to choose the best paper is a bit like trying to ID an insect; there are so many versions to choose from. The one rule that I would advise is never use cheap paper; and don't use third party ink if you want really top quality colour correct prints. But the better quality cheaper inks are fine for average printing. And always use the correct printer setting for the paper, including sufficient resolution (quality setting).
The one thing I have found is that glossy prints tend to sell better than matte. But other people always prefer the glare free characteristics of matte.
The only real answer, as others have already mentioned, is to keep trying different options until you find something you like. You don't have to use the same make of paper as your printer. Epson and Canon papers are good and reliable but I also use Fuji and Ilford from time to time. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
