| | | sigma zooms Hi
I've been looking at a couple of sigma wide angle zooms - the 24-70 f2.8 and the 12-24mm f4.5/5.6.
Has anyone had experience of these ? Are they any good , sharpness is my main issue. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,

| | | Re: sigma zooms Can't comment on the Sigma 24-70mm but if its sharpness you want the Canon 24-70mm f2.8 takes some beating, one of the best lenses they have produced in my book.

| | | Re: sigma zooms The Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 performs well when stopped-down a couple of stops, and gives acceptable results when used wide open. However, distortion at the wide end played a major factor in me replacing it. I initially bought it for photographing land and seascapes, but found that 'wavy' horizons were too much trouble to correct in Photoshop. Therefore, it had to go.
It's a large(ish) chunk of glass, and the zoom action was clunky, but optically it was OK (except for the aforementioned distortion). It's also worth noting that it has an 82mm filter thread, should you wish to use UV or polarising filters.

| | | Re: sigma zooms Yea, I know it wasn't mentioned but the Sigma 10-20mm has been on my wish list for a while. As a Canon user it's either that or the Canon 10-22mm but for all I use ultra-wide angles, the Sigma would suffice. Getting a little off topic here.
The 12-24m would probably be better as a dedicated wide angle.

| | | Re: sigma zooms Hi,
thanks for the replies. You've put me off the 24-70 That just leaves the 12-24 or the sigma 14mm f2.8 which gets very good reviews (only problem is they've stopped producing it I think and everyone seems to be out of Canon).
What I'm after is to get back to a 24mm wideangle in digital. I have a canon 24mm but on the 40D its really only a 38mm - not very wide!
