| | Mourning, kicking and stamping My almost new Canon 40d has given up the ghost.
I removed the memory card last night and loaded the images into the computer, fine no problem. When I replaced the card in the camera, I didnt get the usual reasuring red light, funny I thought, so I switched it on to see if all was well, all wasn't well, although the autofocus worked fine there was no way I could get any life from the l.c.d. screen and the shutter would not opperate, when the shutter button was pressed a busy warning started flashing on both the top control panel and in the viewfinder info panel; thinking it may have been a problem with the memory card I tried replacing it with another and then another and after a third card I gave up on this line and replaced the battery with a fully charged one, still no joy. So it looks like its on its way to the menders, one thousand and nine shutter opperations from new, as you can probably imagine I am not a particularly happy bunny at present, and as Friday night is my night of the week to partake in a few pints of friendly banter down at the pub, I have taken the precaution of leaving the camera at a friends house for the night in case I do something to it that I may well regret after the Guiness has settled in. Its a good thing I kept the old 350d at least I can carry on taking pictures, until hopefully the 40d is sorted out.

| | | Re: Mourning, kicking and stamping I am so sorry
It might be worth removing the backup and main battery
for 48 hours and see if it then comes to life again.
I've heard of other Canon 20-30d's reviving like that. |

| | | Re: Mourning, kicking and stamping Oh dear - there's nothing worse - I'm so sorry too - try to stay calm - I know I shouldn't be saying that - cos I'm the worst for giving inanimate objects a good thrashing when they fail me.............
At least you have back up but as Hobjob David has said try removing all its power sources if you can - its only a small computer after all and what do you do with a bigger one when it plays silly beggers - take the plug out of the socket and remove electric for a spell (usually at the same time as muttered 'let that be a lesson to you' thro gritted teeth!)(and even threatening gestures.............)(doesn't make a jot of difference to the offending object of course, but it might help to keep you sane .......)

| | | Re: Mourning, kicking and stamping I was hoping by now someone would have said, 'Ah, all you need to do is press this or adjust this,' and so sorry no one has done that.
I am a complete technophobe and hate it when things go wrong with no explanation.
I liked it when I could look at something, work out which bit was broken, go to the hardware shop and get a new bit and fix it yourself.
I do hope you find it's repairable.

| | | Re: Mourning, kicking and stamping Since writing this thread I have done a bit of research on the net regarding the problem and find, through various Canon user forums, that it is a common problem with the 40d, which makes me feel no end better (not). It seems that the only solution is a return to Canon, trust me when I say that the others with this problem have tried every solution in the book, some being the obvious ones and some being definately in 'don't go there country' and in every case the faulty cameras have had to be returned to the manufacturer. Canon are keeping very quiet on the subject and it seems no one can get any information from them, which I find a bit disheartening.

I know that this doesn't help matters when a camera suffers from an inherent fault and then proceeds to display it, but what is Canon's response? Have you contacted them direct?

| | | Re: Mourning, kicking and stamping I have yet to get an official response from Canon UK, but will update on progress as and when there is any. Regarding warranty, the camera is six months old, I bought it new on our favorite auction site, supposedly from a UK dealer, with one year international warranty included in the price, It turned out to be a Mack extended warranty, and I have contacted them regarding the problem and am currently awaiting a repair authorisation number, so we shall see what transpires in the fullness of time, meanwhile the 350d is a very adequate substitute and will enable me to continue with my hobby for the present, thanks all for your concern, it is a problem that could affect a lot of us.
