| | | Same ISO - different noise? I have been really struggling with this recently.
2 shots, same ISO - mainly 400 at moment but greatly differing amounts of noise in the picture. I have linked 2 examples and would really love some ideas please. It certainly appears that if the shot is sunny that the noise handling is alot better but thats not always the case.
Please have a look and see what you think, both are untouched at ISO 800.
Any ideas? the difference to me is worth investigating so I can avoid.
Thanks

What camera do you use? some are far more prone to digital noise than others.
I certainly dont get anything like as much noise as this from either of my Canon DSLR's or my Finepix S7000, but I get similar problems if I crank up the ISO on my Nikon 5700. |

| | | Re: Same ISO - different noise? have the levels been adjusted in either of those shots or are they literally straight from the camera? Noise is always far worse in underexposed images and in dark areas of images. Having said that, it looks as though the exposure is about right in both images but maybe one has been adjusted more than the other?
Can I ask what camera these were taken with?

How much post processing have you done to the images? The reason I ask, is that underexposed images will display more noise than images that have been exposed correctly. Rescuing an image that has been grossly underexposed will display more noise.

| | | Re: Same ISO - different noise? Thanks for the speedy replies everyone.
These are taken with a Nikon D50 which I'm starting to guess may be not the best at handling noise, it's a few years old now too.
Processing wise - these are right out the camera, converted from RAW but nothing else other than re-sizing. I was thinking maybe I have the camera settings wrong somewhere. It certainly handles sunshine shots MUCH better than darker ones which I guess is normal to an extent but there really is a large difference. If anything I have been pushing for over exposure rather than under as I've read previously that can help with higher ISOs.
I've only recently started shooting at ISO400 since I picked up the Bigma so that I can get some workable shots in lower light.
Thanks again
