| | | Resizing Images using Lightroom Since the introduction of the new Gallery software and my switch to Lightroom for post processing it seems I now have more chance of winning the lottery than getting an image into the Gallery and am desperate for help.
The problem seems to be regarding image size. This morning I exported an image from light room to my hard drive the image was 683x1024 pixels and file size 463kb, attempted to upload to the Gallery and got told image too small needed to be 800x600.
Tried increasing the size several times and kept getting the same message.
Eventually I managed to upload the same image at a massive 1729x2592 pixels a 2.47mb file size which was downsized to 1067x 1599 by the Gallery software. (far too big for my liking).
I would dearly love to be able to upload images at 683x1024 or 600x900 as I feel that they are best viewed at this resolution but the Gallery software wont let me or am I doing something wrong when I export images from Lightroom. How can you upload an image at a given size so it cannot be enlarged within the Gallery? What are the best settings in the Lightroom Export dialogue box for uploading to the Gallery?
Desperate for help and guidance please from fellow Lightroom users.
Gerry

Gerry | Ah, I can see your problem Gerry. All images must be a minimum of 800 pixels wide, whatever the format. The minimum height is 600 pixels. So your 683 x 1024 simply isn't wide enough. If your shot was the other way round, that is 1024 x 683, it would have been accepted. One of the weird properties of the automated system.

| | | Re: Resizing Images using Lightroom Hi Gerry. Which version of Lightroom are you using?
In version 1.3 'Constrain Maximum Size' has gone, it has been replaced by a dropdown menu of choices. This would certainly allow you to select a 'WAB' size.

| | | Re: Resizing Images using Lightroom Hi John, Graham
I think Graham has pinpointed the problem i.e.the width needs to be at least 800 pixels wide even when the image is in portrait layout.
I am using version 1.3.1 John, looks like what I need to do is click on export and scroll down to the image settings, tick the box for resize to fit and select short edge and then enter 800 pixels. I am not sure though what effect it has if I tick the 'Don't Enlarge' box, will this mean the image will only be able to be viewed in the Gallery at the selected size i.e.800 x 1200 (2:3 ratio).
Have just got back from a birding trip so will have another go this evening.
Any more suggestions more than welcome.

| | | Re: Resizing Images using Lightroom When your in Develop mode in Lightroom set the aspect ratio to original. When you export , tick the box Resize to fit and choose Width and Height and enter the pixels that you want, for example 800px x 600px for landscape or 800 x 800 for a portrait crop.

| | | Re: Resizing Images using Lightroom Well now I understand that the minimum width has to be 800 pixels whether it be portrait or landscape format I seem to have overcome the problem of uploading. The original aspect ratio of my images which I usually retain is 3:1 so for my portrait images it looks like I am stuck with a minimum of 800 x 1200
The bit I can't seem to master is uploading an image so it can only be viewed in the Gallery at one size, i.e. no facility to click on it to enlarge.
Just had a look at some of Dai's recent images and they are 800x600 and there is no facility to enlarge viewing size. How do you do that?
Thank you all for your help.

| | | Re: Resizing Images using Lightroom All images up to 880 pixels are displayed at that size. If you load larger ones, you simply click on the image and it shows at the larger size. I try and only load at the default size if at all possible because I don't like the compression effects on the displayed size image. |

| | | Re: Resizing Images using Lightroom Thanks for that Graham.
Looks like I will have to keep experimenting with aspect ratio, format and size. I loaded a bird image to the Gallery a couple of weeks ago, it looked great on my screen and the A4 print was brilliant. In the Gallery it looked terrible and a bit of an embarassment so am a bit wary now, must be something to do with the software compression.
