Anyone use the Canon 400mm f 5.6 lens?

I am thinking of upgrading my current telephoto lens and am considering the Canon 400mm f5.6 to go with my 350D to get better bird pics.If you've got one are you pleased with it and do you use a tele converter ?

Not a cheap buy so you do well to seek advice. I am sure you will get some on here as there are some top bird photographers.

Hello senatore I use a 350D but I don't use a 400mm f5.6 lens, I use a Sigma 50 - 500mm lens. I am sure there will be someone on here who does have experience of this lens who will reply to you.

Hi there Max. I use the 30d with a 300 f4 plus 1.4 converter. I thought about the 400 f5.6 but the IS is really useful and for well worth saving the extra for and when you add the 1.4 you have 420mm at f5.6 with IS and it is still very sharp!

Hello, I have the Canon 400mm f5.6, it is a superb lens - Light and sharp (even wide open). I have also used it with my Canon 1.4 tc, you need to tape three of the pins on the converter to acheive AF unless you use a cheap kenko/tamron tc. For birds in flight this is considered the number one Canon lens even with the pro's. Guarantee this lens will not disappoint.

I had the chance to use this lens for a few days a couple of months ago. I was and still am extremely impressed with its performance. Sharp, fast focus, well balanced and not too heavy. I'm seriously considering getting one when finances allow!
