It's been good to see your progress with this lens. I'm seriously considering saving up for one myself. |

| | | Re: Close Ups with 100-400mm Some very nice shots particularly the like the Nuthatch. If I can capture this level of detail when my 100-400mm comes back from the Canon repair centre I will be a very happy bunny.

| | | Re: Close Ups with 100-400mm Colin, the initial three shots are all excellent, particularly the Nuthatch! We're all aware of the compression of the WAB gallery and your photo shows no obvious evidence- Lovely crisp and sharp pic. Secondly, the Canada Geese in flight shot is absolutely spot on. As you say, the straggler is just a notch out of focus, but this becomes such a minor thing when you look at how crisp and perfectly captured the rest are.
Seriously, extremely good photographs mate. Well done indeed.
Nick
P.s- How far were you, distance wise, from the first three shots? |

The Nuthatch is a beauty. You have certainly mastered your camera and lens to get shots to this standard. I look forward to seeing more

| | | Re: Close Ups with 100-400mm Aha, I see an F8 value in the EXIF. I'm off to Minsmere for the first time tomorrow (very excited about that) and am hoping to try out at F8, see if it improves my sharpness a little.
Oh, and improve my almost-non-existent camera skills
And biceps with the pump come to think of it |

And biceps with the pump come to think of it | be aware that although f8 will increase you depth of field meaning that more of the subject may be sharp, this will also lead to more confused/ less blurred backgrounds.
Better in my view to keep the apperture on f5.6 (if your pump is really unsharp at f5.6 it's faulty and needs to go see the nice men at canon) , and concentrate on keeping your shutter speeds up to remove movement blur - Camera wobble should be anissue if IS is turned on.

| | | Re: Close Ups with 100-400mm Yes, I see your point about the isolation of the background but I found having shot at mostly F8 at Minsmere on Saturday that the sharpness was definitely better. I've seen this mentioned on a few occasions on other sites.
There's always the danger as you say of a dodgy lens. I'm trying not to think about that at the moment Otherwise, yes, it'll be on its way to meet its maker. |

| | | Re: Close Ups with 100-400mm Many zooms improve in sharpness when stepped down, in fact most lenses do. I know for certain my Bigma does. For that reason I don't like using it wide open unless the light levels are so low it's the only option. The difference in DOF between F5.6 and F8 shouldn't be huge, the background should hopefully still be pretty clean, depending of course how close the background is!
Take this one for example taken a couple of days ago. The bird was only about 20ft away, with quite a busy background: |

| | | Re: Close Ups with 100-400mm ....My sentiments entirely. The difference in DOF at the distance I'm shooting is impossible to tell to my eye. Sharpness has improved but I make sure I now shoot only in the best possible light. Last Saturday was a lovely day and I had no probs at F8 with the 1.4 attached | | | |
