| | | first Pic with new 100-400mm lens When out with The grandson to the park, I managed to get one pic only it was dark, loads of folks and the grandson wanted of I am pleased with the pic because it was really dark (no flash) and its the first pic through this lens. Will we ever get any sun. Not cropped straight of the camera. |

You'll find that your 'Pump' really makes the most of the available light. When shooting in relatively poor light I'm always amazed at how much lighter the images come out than I expected.
Good Luck with it.

| | | Re: first Pic with new 100-400mm lens Good first shot - the pump is an amazing lens and really comes into its own in low light conditions.
You will have a ball with it when Spring comes along, I look forward to seeing the results.

| | | Re: first Pic with new 100-400mm lens Have to agree that's a very nice photo. Focus is spot on, giving it great clarity and exposure is good.
Please don't mind me saying so but if it were mine I would have cropped it a bit to bring the bird closer and also it would have removed a bit of the surplus area to the right of the photo.
Many of us, me included have to crop to bring the bird nearer and as long as the photo is nice and sharp in the first place the quality should not suffer as long as you don't overdo it.
These are only my personal opinions though.
Well done it's great to see you making such good progress in such a short time.

| | | Re: first Pic with new 100-400mm lens Thanks to all, Just for a change this morning the weather is grey and raining Its like having a toy at Christmas as a kid, and not being allowed to play with it. I have seen some of the post's and been advised on flash setups the results look great, the trouble is for the moment if I spend anymore money we have not got My wife said she would have a pair of earings made from a suitable part of my body Perhaps something I am not willing to risk for my new hobby |

| | | Re: first Pic with new 100-400mm lens You wouldnt have to spend a fortune on a flash setup. A secondhand flash unit from the likes of Ebay, rigged with a wireless slave adaptor(very cheap off Ebay) ,can be triggered from your camera`s own flash. You just turn your camera`s flash right down so it triggers the slave flash, but doesnt affect the subject lighting.
Using a wireless slave flash like this, you dont have to worry about flash compatibility with your camera, as its not directly connected. As long as the flash unit has the ability to manually control the output (usually a switch on the back, which reduces the output by 1/2 ,1/4 etc etc) you`ll have enough control to get good results.
As an example I recently bought an old Sunpak flash from Ebay for a fiver, with manual control. Its not compatible with my camera, but its fine for wireless slave use.The slave unit can be had for less than a tenner.

| | | Re: first Pic with new 100-400mm lens Certainly a nice image. Took me months of practice to produce a comparable image when I first got my 100-400mm.
Well done!
