I can just about see Canary Wharf from my house, but I've only ever been there once or twice, so it's good to be reminded how it looks close up! |

Another way to sell your work is like i do by writing a supporting article to go with 4/5 photographs and sending in to magazines like Outdoor Photography if they don't want the article they some times just go with the photos. The free lance Photographers hand book is worth getting it highlights different markets. Sometimes it pays to visit your local printers they often require wildlife/landscape/people shots

That's some good advice there, lost in the woods. I did once write a piece for my local paper with supporting photos (about a volunteer day at my local reserve) but they said they never paid for such submissions. I said they could have it for free - good publicity for the reserve and might encourage more volunteers - but they still didn't run it. I've only just discovered Outdoor Photography magazine but I'm very impressed with it and will almost certainly become a subscriber.

Congrats Dave for selling your pic!
I am a contributor to a nature photo agency and have been looking for other agencies/outlets for my photos and Phographers Direct looks very good.
Anyone have any other experience, good or bad of PD?

PD is the only agency I have any experience with and I have no complaints. They don't actively try to sell your pics so you're relying on people searching their library and liking your work. But then they don't charge as much commission as other agencies do so I guess it's swings and roundabouts.
The other way to sell through PD is responding to the requests for images that buyers post. This can be a bit more frustrating as sometimes the people posting the requests never come and close them off. I still have images attached to a request with a deadline of 13 December 2006!
Can I ask which nature photo agency you're with and what you think of them?

| | | Re: Just sold my first photo! Dave, I've been with Picture Nature for 6 months or so. I've dealt with the owner/director personally and she is very friendly and helpfull. They take wildlife, landscape and environment type pictures and manage the rights(non exclusively). The commission is 60/40 in favour of the photographer which is very good!
Seems you need lots of photos and/or have to just wait for the right buyer to come along. I guess that's the same with all the agencies though.
I've recently submitted images to the RSPB image agency for consideration of becoming a contributor to that. They want 100 pics every 2 months though and i'm not sure i'd be able to keep up! Still waiting for a reply though....yawn!

| | | Re: Just sold my first photo! that seems to be the issue with the larger libraries really - the number of photos required really does limit the clientelle to pros or very very keen amateurs. I use PD too, largely because there's nothing to lose from not using them really, but haven't sold through them. My PF is pretty small though, so I'm not surprised
My plan for the new year is to investigate some more stock libraries a bit more thoroughly and hopefully have enough images to push the sales a bit harder. So if anyone knows any good libraries that they have used and can recommend it would be interesting to hear.
