Just sold my first photo! - Page 2

Nice one Dave, My 300mm F2.8 VR lens was recently purchased with money from image sales. Half of that amount was raised by just one picture alone! It was of a famous offshore lighthouse and not of wildlife.

Well done Dave.

I remember how I felt when I sold my first photo via PD .... a Yorkshire Dales landscape to a company building new homes.

It is a good feeling isn't it? Recognition at last!

Mind you my first photo was also my last one too

. And a 20% sale commission for an agency is very good as most agencies take 50% or even more!

I've had a look at the site, and I like the way they work. Your in charge of your fee, and the terms you negotiate with your purchaser. There's nothing to stop you selling the image over and over again, and not only with them. Plus the fact YOU get 80% of the fee, this is way more than most of the other libraries give you.
I liked it so much, I've signed up with them!

Thanks Matt! It was a royalty free sale.

For those not familiar with the terms, as I wasn't until recently, this means that the purchaser is free to use the image in pretty much anyway they like, but also that I am free to sell it again to someone else should the opportunity arise. Rights managed, on the other hand, means that the purchaser is limited to a specific usage stipulated at the time of purchase and that there will very likely be restrictions on me selling it to anyone else for a specific period of time.

I'm obviously pretty new to all this so if I've got those definitions wrong someone please jump in and correct me!

No Dave. I've never liked the terms. Seeing your success and looking at their site, you really can't lose. I'd never heard of them before, so thanks very much for the info!

I've just got to dust down some full framed shots and upload a few.

Ch-ching! A mere eight months after my first sale I've just made my second, this time for £40 before commission. At this rate I'll be able to retire in about 2375!

Still not a wildlife photo though. This time it was London Docklands at night...

This was one of only about three occasions when I've taken photos specifically for a request posted on the Photographers Direct site. The request was for:

"A night time, black and white, panoramic skyline of Canary Wharf, London, preferably showing the Credit Suisse building at 1 Cabot Square. The image would be put into a frame and used for a display."

As it's only a few miles from me I nipped up to Rotherhithe and spent a couple of hours, from dusk to full night, taking pics. I'm a country lover at heart but I have to admit that it's a beautiful sight, especially with the river in the foreground.

I posted up my ten best shots (the maximum allowed) and never heard a thing, although the request is still open. The sale today was to someone completely different who was just looking for a docklands image.

I did ask for £50 to start with but got beaten down!

As it's for non-commercial use (they want a framed print as a present for someone) I'm fairly relaxed about it. And the buzz from knowing someone liked it enough to pay for it is worth as much as the cash. (Well, almost!

An interesting idea Nick, but I have to warn you that I snore. I snore long and I snore loud. I wake myself up regularly. You may find yourself staggering out at 4 am to kip in your car in the Travelodge car park! If you're serious and willing to risk it PM me.
