When will it ever end!!!!!!!

Answer it probably won't
Solid state HDs are nearly here.

(google for engadget)

Pretec intros 16GB / 24GB / 48GB CompactFlash cards

Just in case you haven't had enough flash storage for one day, Pretec's making sure you really do get your fill. Announced today at CES, the outfit unveiled a 16GB, 24GB and 48GB CompactFlash card, with the 2GB - 24GB iterations available in 333x flavors (50MB/sec) and the 1GB - 48GB models available in 233x (35MB/sec). Unfortunately, the details we're really after -- you know, price and release dates -- are curiously missing, but hopefully Pretec will toss those tidbits out in the near future.

I don't see the point of these, at least so far as cameras are concerned. To leave that much data on a card without backing it up somewhere else, is a recipe for disaster.
Up to 16GB maybe, but 48GB.. Of course there's plenty of other uses for these, no doubt the increased capacity for those might make more sense.

Re: 48 - Forty Eight Gigabyte Compact Flash Card !!!!

I just bought two 4GB cards and thought I was going nuts. Overall I have 11GB of storage but spread over 4 cards incase something happens to one of them.

48GB? pretty ridiculous and it'll cost the earth too.

48Gb is ludicrous and just asking for trouble with lost filesbetter with 4-5 2GB cards instead at least you will not lose all pics if anything happened

Depends on how much they intend to sell them for and how much its cost would compare to an external hard drive which I would otherwise use to hold duplicate versions.

Being so small you could fill them full of back up (or keep them as originals even - with 2gig cards becoming so cheap that is probably what I'll end up doing) and lock them into one of those little fireproof lockable boxes for all time - the only problem I can see is yes if you use them as you say and don't download the pics until its full you risk having an awful lot of eggs in one basket...(i tend to download as soon as I get back from a trip becuase I'm excited to see if any are good) and they are so tiny (esp sd cards) they're rather hard to label!!

I supppose it also depends on how big your camera resolution is - if you are a fashion photographer shooting raw with a hasselblad H3 and leaf aptus back you could be putting out an uncompressed 45mp - This is arround 5 times the size of the file out put from a canon 20D

thus if you can get about 100 raw files in 1GB with the 20d - with the H3 this would be about 20 images per GB - or 960 on the card which isnt unreasonable for a full days shooting. - I often have that many in 8mp jpeg on my 4gb card

Re: 48 - Forty Eight Gigabyte Compact Flash Card !!!!

I was more imagining the logistical nightmare of dealing with such a potentially huge number of images.
Because I take so many shots, I clear my cards after each outing, be there 1 shot or 200. If I didn't and let them accumulate on the card, my inherently lazy nature would in the end leave me in a right old mess! I store my images in folders named after the place I took them. It's essential I do this whilst my memory is still fresh, leave it a couple of days and I'd get really messed up!
For me, 2GB is ample. When I've got my 12.1 sensor camera I may go to 4GB, but I doubt I'd need or want more, until the bar moves once again!

Virtually the same with me Graham, except I store my images in folders by species (loosely). e.g. Amphibs, Bees, Wasps, Beetles, Birds, Butterflies, Caterpillars, Damselflies, Dragonflies etc., etc.

All images are then catalogued using Pixfiler with all neccessary info related to each image, such as Place Taken, Date, EXIF data, etc., etc.

One of the problems with back ups is that they too will fail at sometime or other, whether be internal/external HDD, CD, DVD, Tape or Flash drives.

I also use Pixfiler, I find it invaluable. Well worth the effort of putting all the info in. It's one of the simplest but most useful programs I've bought.

I'm a backup neurotic! All my images go firstly into a folder for the full frame unedited ones, which is then copied onto another internal hard drive. I do the same for all the ones I've prepared for here,or anywhere else.
Every month I file them in Pixfiler, and copy this to the other hard drive as well. After I've done this, I backup all the images to two DVDs. One I keep here another set I keep away from the computer.

I`m the same re backups.....external hard drive, and copies onto 2 seperate dvds. Another useful way of backing up would be to use an online host site that allows full size pics to be uploaded. I know Flickr allows this, and you can also set images to private so no one can "pinch" the originals. The more backup options the better I reckon

I've got a few on Flickr, but I must admit I don't update there often. I just don't seem to get on well there, I'm not sure why, it's just a site that leaves me cold. I do store most of my better ones on Photobox, which gives me free space every month.
As you say, the more the better!

I have a couple of 1 and 2gb cards that are all I need. 48gb - how much are they and how long would it take to fill one.

Ah, I remember my first hard drive, 32Mb and sent via Securicor. I KNEW I would never fill it, but it felt so cool to have that much space. Over £500.

My first one was for my wonderful Apricot computer, cost me over £3,500, had TWO 3.1/2" 320K Floppy disk drives and a 9" Green and black monitor. My hard drive was a Huge 5MB!! External of course, the size and weight of two house bricks!
I once bought a program for that computer that would allow me to draw straight lines, circles etc... Extremely complicated, I paid over £750 just for that program!!
Anyone buying computers these days don't realise how lucky they are!

ok, I'm a little younger but I still remember the first PC my parents bought. Mind bending 16mb RAM, 333 Mhz and something like 300mb HDD. Windows 95 and the almighty Paint - my favourite app. Simply magnificent.

I was thinking the same thing, according to the specs I read on the Canon site the Canon 1Ds III will shoot five ~50MB frames per second If you are into sports photography and the like and you are rattling shots off in servo mode then you would probably be glad of 48GB

Paul

Re: 48 - Forty Eight Gigabyte Compact Flash Card !!!!

A friend recently lost all his shots taken on a South African Safari trip due to a failed Compact Flash card. I won't say who the manufacturer was other than it was one of the market leaders. The card was returned to the manufacturer but they were unable to retrieve the images.

The thought of having all of a days shoot or worse still a whole week on one 48GB card sends shivers down my spine.

No doubt someone would find a use for 48Gb, but for me I will stick to spreading a days shoot across several 2 and 4Gb cards. Better to be safe than sorry. After all how long does it take to change a card and they don't exactly take up a lot of space.

Gerry
