I used the Olympus OM 1 and OM 2n for many years (and still have both cameras). They used to be one of "the big five" of Japanese camera and lens makers, but fell behind in SLR development (both film and digital) during the latter part of the last century, preferring to concentrate on the compact camera market. They appear to have broadened their range somewhat in recent years, and even released the four-thirds system, which allowed other camera manufacturers to share their technology.
The bottom line is, there are no bad cameras that come out of Japan these days: it's just down to what suits you.

I've used both the OM1 and the OM10, which are both 35mm SLR film cameras and they are both churning out cracking results. As HW has Identified though, they have definitely fallen behind in the last decade or so, but that's not to say that the quality of their products has degraded. If you've ordered an Olympus compact or Compact SLR, you'll not be disappointed if the specs are what you want

Then you can get advice from contributers to this (and other) forums as to what will suit your needs, and make a more informed decision. If you have any doubt about the Olympus, then cancel. It's better to wait a while, than to be forced to live with something you don't want.
There are many people here who will only be too willing to help you out if you ask.
Worth thinking about.

| | | Re: order first and ask after.. No, not at all, but it seems to me that it's more or less an impulse purchase. I feel you could make a more informed decision if you were aware of what's available in the camera market. It hinges on what you intend to use the camera for. One advantage of the FourThirds system is that the popular Sigma models are available in this mount, so additional lenses are readily available for this camera.
Obviously, the Olympus will not compare to the high-end Nikon and Canon SLR's, but at the same time it won't deliver poor results.

| | | Re: order first and ask after.. The high end ones are out of my means - i'm paying on the never never form next nov, so was very limited in the choices i had...as far as compact slr's go there was no choice It's something i have been thinking about for a little while, so not quite as impulsive as it seems, more an attack of cold feet! A friend did mention ebay and film slrs but if i was traveling thought i might end up leaving films at developers or something equally silly - while it sounds unlikely if my minds set on the next location it could happen. I just wanted to know it wasn't useless - although i know it's what you do with it...

The kit lenses are both very good too. You'd have to pay a lot of money to get equivalent quality lenses from other manufacturers. And the dust buster beats the competition by a country mile. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
