| | | Re: sigma 50-500 heads up It must be the older non DG Bigma. My EX DG worked right away with my D200.
It's a fine lens.

Smells fishy!

| | | Re: sigma 50-500 heads up Looking again on E-bay I find one of the hong kong suppliers now says: This high zoom ratio lens is optimized for digital SLR cameras and capable of covering a wide range of focal lengths from 50mm standard to 500mm ultra telephoto. This ultra-zoom lens employs a seven-group zoom system, which provides a high zoom magnification of 10x. Triple-cam Rear Focusing System ensures high precision throughout the whole focus range.
These are large-aperture lenses with wide angles and short minimum focusing distances. With an abundance of peripheral illumination, they are ideal lenses for Digital SLR Cameras whilst retaining suitability for traditional 35mm SLRs.
Due to the combination of the Nikon D200 camera with this lens can cause improper exposure, Please contact Sigma local shop for free upgrade if this lens you buy is for Nikon D200 Camera. And the lens function properly with any other D-SLR cameras

| | | Re: sigma 50-500 heads up The 170-500mm is £100 cheaper because it isn't as sharp and the focusing is a lot slower.
The 50-500mm has the HSM silent/fast focusing - that makes ALL the difference when using this lens for wildlife.

| | | Re: sigma 50-500 heads up I have to agree with Oy. A friend of mine has recently changed from a 170-500 to the 50-500m and he is amazed at the difference, both in the sharpness and the speed of focusing. |

| | | Re: sigma 50-500 heads up Just an indication of what you get for your money with the Bigma.
This week I tested my 50-500mm against a froends Nikon 80-400mm VR - a lens that's supposed to be better and costs about £300 more.
The Bigma at 400mm gave AT LEAST as good results as the Nikon at 400mm - with VR ON!

| | | Re: sigma 50-500 heads up I tested my little bigma against a Canon 100-400 IS and found that it offered comparable results at 400mm too
Mind you I have found the 170-500 to be soft at the edges wide open when used on a full frame camera, but this is no issue on a cropped sensor such as the 20D because the sensor can't see those bits of the lens.
