| | | Bigma Non HSM Pentax fit I have saved two thirds the price for a Sigma 50-500 for my Pentax K10D and notice that they do not make the HSM model in Pentax mount. Before I cough up £700 on what people say is an excellent lens,is the HSM that important and if so would I be better saving a few bob and just buy the 170-500?.

| | | Re: Bigma Non HSM Pentax fit in a word yes - the glass in the bigma is slightly better quality - the little bigma displays some chromatic aberation at the edge which the big bro does not but with a cropped sensor (as all pentax DSLRs currently are) this will not make a difference.
so yep hsm is the biggest difference - little bigma is sometimes reffered to with backhanded affection as "the coffee grinder" on account of the noise from the focussing - but it is only the hsm which prevents this noise so a bigma with a standard sigma focussing module would be equally loud.
The only other consideration is the zoom range if you go with the little bigma it will mean changing lenses for wide (ie less than 170mm) shots, wheras bigma goes down to 50mm - whether this is significant will depend on what you are doing and how your wide to long ratio of shots compares (and also if you have a lens that covers the 50-170 zoom range already.

| | | Re: Bigma Non HSM Pentax fit I have a Bigma and its a superb lens, but if you cant get one with HSM for the Pentax DSLR's then I'd go for the 170 - 500mm and save yourself some money. |

| | Re: Bigma Non HSM Pentax fit Thanks to everyone for your helpful comments.I had set my heart on the 50-500 because of all the excellent reports, but if the picture quality of this lens and the 170-500 is minimal and the main difference being the HSM then I can`t see the point in shelling out an extra £200.I have the Sigma 70-300 already and I doubt if the"coffee grinder" is any noisier than that. The 70-300 will cover most of the 50-170 distance(probably sharper then at full zoom) and I also have a Tokina 80-200 4.5-5.6 which although manual focus takes good photo`s.Thanks to all again.

| | | Re: Bigma Non HSM Pentax fit I use the non HSM bigma on my GX10 and it has been worth every penny. I tried both lenses in Jessops and the feel and the build quality of the bigma is much better. With such a large zoom range it is also a versitile lens that I use for almost all my wildlife work meaning fewer lens changes out in the elements. I would advise you to try them both before deciding. In the 170-500s favour it is much lighter. |

| | Re: Bigma Non HSM Pentax fit I searched everywhere!
I wanted it before I went on holiday and had almost given up. In desparation I went to my local Jessops and asked if they could order one in. It arrived within a week and I got to try it out on my camera before I bought it. They agreed to price-match warehouse express as well. It is unlikley that you will get to try both lenses on your camera but must shops will have them in Canon mount and will put them on a 30D or similar so you can feel the difference. The Canon one will have HSM so take that into account when playing with the autofocus.
The Bigma is an EX lens so is one of Sigmas top of the range lenses. I did a lot of research and the professional reviewers seem to agree that the image quality is better on the Bigma. I should add that the Bigma needs 86mm filters which are not cheap, so I would factor that into your budget.
I also had problems getting a 70-300 and would imagine that few people will have a 170-500 ready to ship either. If you are happy to wait most of the dealers will order K mount lenses in from Sigma for you but you might have to wait for well over a month!
Happy hunting, just try everyone you can think of. |

| | | Re: Bigma Non HSM Pentax fit I have noticed that the Pentax and Samsung websites have put new firmware up which adds the capacity to use the new Pentax silent/fast lenses on the GX10 an K10D. I guess it is possible that with this Sigma could now release a 50-500 in K-mount with HSM. The cameras have never been compatable with fast silent motors before.
.
This is pure speculation on my part and I have heard nothing to back up my theory. I thought it might be worth mentioning only because you say you are still saving so it may be worth checking the Sigma press releases for any hint that they may be about to release any of their HSM lenses in K-mount before buying. |
