| | | From film to digital Just wondering of all the photographers who have gone from film to digital
1) Do you still have your film camera?
2) If so how often do you use it?
I ask these questions as I have now ordered my first digital (30d) and was wondering if I should keep all of my film gear, by this I mean the 2 bodies and the scanner, although one body will have to go (the 30v ) as I can't see the point of keeping that as well as the EOS 3
Apologies if this topic has been covered before!

| | | Re: From film to digital I only got back into photography last summer after a break of more than 10 years (apart from P&S) so I didn't have any film gear when I got my first DSLR but if I did I wouldn't use it because working with digital is quick and easy. I used to work in a pro E6 lab when I lived in London so film was cheap and processing was free and I used to dev. my own B+W as well. But the possibilities of digital mean I couldn't go back to film now, I'd missing amount of control the processing stage offers far too much... |

Justin | I went from pentax film gear to an EOS 300D about two years ago, selling all the film kit. However since then I have added two more digital bodies (a s/h 10D that I "killed", and recently a 20D), but have also bought (second hand) an Eos 30E, and an Eos 3 ( I breifly had an EOS 5 as well but I killed that too, note to self saltwater and cameras dont mix,).
I now use the 20D as my main body with the 300D as a second body. The EOS 3 is for high action tracking auto (though if the 20D is good enogh at this I might sell the 3), while the 30E has taken over as my "high risk" camera for scenarios such as photographing Gannets from RIBs round grassholm (which is what killed my 10D). Ive also just aded a Mamiya 645 for landscape work. The Digital revolution hasnt half created some cracking second hand bargains.

| | | Re: From film to digital For what you'd get for it I'd keep it. Put it in a box and forget about it, and like you said make it an heirloom. A beautiful present from Gramps to grandson and keep some photos taken with it. A bit of history and a good way to educate them.
I fondly remember sharing a pipe with my Grandad. I'll remember it for the rest of my life. I lived in North Yorks at the time so must have been somewhere between 7 and 9. Fantastic.

| | | Re: From film to digital I sold my Nikon F90x on ebay, and have my brothers F5 and F3 on there at the minute (he's getting a D200 and I've got his hand-me-down D70!). I just begrudged paying the ever increasing development costs, which slowed up my photography and interest in it. That's not to say digital is cheap, especially with all the peripheral costs, it's just that digital is so convenient. I can't see me every going back to film now, although I might make an exception with large format, with this only used for fine art reproduction and achiving. |

| | | Re: From film to digital I have done just that (put it in a box) with my Canon EOS 100 and Sigma lenses. Since they are about 15 years old I've decided just to hold on to them. The EOS 100 was used until I got my first digital camera around 5 years ago, but has never been used since. I feel I would rather keep it than sell it for practically nothing. |

Bring back the good old days | It's ok to do this Boddie if you don't need the money to go digital, which I'm afraid I did, even with a bargain buy from my brother |

| | | Re: From film to digital Must admit that the temptation to sell the 30v on ebay is growing closer as the extra cash could come in handy to get another lens (or part of it anyway).
I will just wait and see how much I use the EOS 3 and scanner in the coming months before deciding to sell them or keep them. |

| | | Re: From film to digital Hi guys, as i've just turned 14 I haven't really used film camera's as i only started photography when I was 8, I only really seriously got into photography when I won my age category in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition in 2004. However i did buy a Nikon D100 the year before. Earlier this year i purchased a Nikon D200, I had to sell the D100 I only got £400 for it though so i paid for the other £900 or so money I've won in competitions in the last two years. i would never go back to using film now as Digital has surpassed this now in my opinion+for wildlife photography I really need the 1.5x in camera magnification you get from the Nikon DSLR's to get satisfying results. |

| | | Re: From film to digital It was an image of the Northern lights taken about a mile from my house, heres a link to it http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/ga...mage-4890.html unfortunately the picture came out terribly in the book because borders were printed black, the ink from the borders spread across into the image and makes it almost unrecognisable, you can't see the green and can hardly see the red either I was highly disappointed as it made the picture look teriible and i knew it would probably be seen by thousands of people worldwide.

Fergus | I've heard the traveling exhibition images aren't all that good quality either! You'd have thought for such a prestidgious compitition they'd be spot on. Never mind it was a superb image, glad you won with it - and spent the money wisely |

| | | Re: From film to digital If you are only going to use film occasionally you might do better to keep the 30V and sell the 3, The market is better for more advanced gear (marginally) so you'd get a bit more. For info when I bought my 30E in mint condition for £85, I could have had a mint v model for £150 instead. Eos 3 s are changing hands for £3-500 depending on condition and gullability of buyer.

| | | Re: From film to digital I still use my old Nikon FG-20, mainly for arty B&W stuff. I use 2 lenses with it...
Nikon 50mm F1.8
Nikon 85mm F2
I probably put about 4 films a year through it - mainly C41 B&W stuff like Ilford XP4.
Some recent samples...
