To all people with their humanity intact it should be totally obvious that squirrels were not created for the purpose of hunting. In terms of human depravity eating squirrels is just one step below cannibalism.
The gray squirrels DO NOT eradicate the super-adorable red squirrels. Red squirrels simply run away from the grays, as the latter are stronger genetically. The way to preserve the reds is to focus ON THEM, not to focus murderously on the grays. The number one killer of the squirrels are the bandit-drivers on the streets and roads. Conduct an educational campaign for them to stop killing squirrels. Put up “STOP for squirrels” road signs. Exterminate natural killers of squirrels – raccoons, hawks, falcons, eagles, etc. Protect and feed everywhere the adorable squirrels; ALL OF THEM!
You are lucky squirrel-murdering bandits I don’t live in your decadent country. If I caught you killing squirrels, it would be YOU who would be hunted by me, after being given one warning to stop. |

So everyone is laughing rather hard that its inhumane to kill grey squirrels but ok to kill raccoons, hawks, falcons, eagles etc.
Oh and there are very few racoons in the UK So I politely suggest you research the situation before accusing the UK of nationalism, racism and whatever else ...
Back to the thread topic, I keep getting a page not found, but Ive come across your site before Richard, and was impressed by the photos (especially the grebes)

The red's dietary requirements are far more specific than those of the grey, who eat virtually anything and everything. They will damage and destroy a woodland habitat. So rather than "running away" they are simply driven out, and if there are no suitable alternative habitats - they perish.

It is in no small part due to the perpetuation of sweeping untruths, that the world is generally in such a mess. And, name calling is a rather childish method of expressing oneself, immediately reducing the efficacy of any argument that one might wish to reasonably demonstrate.
As for the content of your post -what complete nonsense. QUOTE - "The number one killer of the squirrels are the bandit-drivers on the streets and roads". - FICTION.
Show me unequivocal statistics and I might be prepared to listen.
The grey squirrel is a non-native species in Britain - FACT!
The grey squirrel takes over the red's habitat & food sources - FACT!
Reds affected by pressure of local grey populations breed far less successfully - FACT!
Squirrel parapox virus, a major killer of the red was introduced to Britain by the American Grey Squirrel - FACT!
Not a very auspicious initial post, but should you wish to lighten up, and learn your facts before firing off any further vehement tirades, you will be made most welcome as a WAB member - even if you are an American.
Regards,
Mike. |

| | | Re: Grey Squirrels mike i agree - but lets not feed the troll , hopefully it will go back to living under a bridge and eating goats.
incidentally since richards visit in 07, parapox has now reached formby (My understanding is that some well meaning idiot released grey squirells near there) and there are very few of the previously numerous red squirells surviving.

| | | Re: Grey Squirrels Thanks ChrissyMarie, appreciated Had to work hard to get them in the light.
I visited Formby last Nov and it was very disheartening to see the numbers were so low. The warden did recently say there were signs of hope shining through, so not all lost yet! Fingers crossed!

| | | Re: Grey Squirrels I live close to Formby and early last year saw two or three. The same time this year I saw none.
However, last Thursday I went to Ainsdale NNR, just a few miles up the coast from Formby and saw one red Maybe just maybe | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
