| | | Re: nikon D50 Barbra I think that the canon is excellent but for some people the Nikon is better,if you go to www.dpreview I think there may be a comparison check
I bought the Nikon D70 because it had everything ,and filled my hands comfortably, the feel is quality, the spec on the canon is good but for me it has a cheap plasticky feel, the 20d at the time was much more expensive by a couple of hundred
see http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond50/page19.asp

Another camera to check out is the Olympus E500 twin lens kit which is excellent value, gets good reviews and you don't need to worry about cleaning your cameras sensor.

The D50 is very basic indeed and I honestly feel that most people would out-grow it in a matter of months.
My advice would be to have a close look at the D70s or the Olympus E500 for a little more money you get more features, more control of your photography and a camera that will match your increasing photographic skills.
Just for the record I do not have either camera, I use a Canon EOS 20D and a Fuji S7000,
so I'm not biased in any way |

The big advantage of it over others are it's sensor cleaner, and it's format, meaning if you have a 50-500 lens, it becomes a 100-1000 on the Olympus!
The sensor cleaning shouldn't be under stated. I've already had to clean my 20D, after only 4 lens swaps! |

so I'm not biased in any way | I certainly see your point Fourwings but at £345 the D50 is a steal at the moment with the D70S at least £220 more.Couple that with a minimum of £400 for a reasonably decent long reach zoom or £700 for slightly better then £300 for a macro and on and on etc it all starts getting a tad expensive.
Because my photography knowledge is not that good i looked at this camera because of its good "out of the box" reviews and ease of use.
Is there really that much extra on the D70S that warrants that extra outlay.
I have just looked and i would say there are not that many tbh.
I have also seen some cracking pics taken with this camera. |

| | | Re: nikon D50 The D50 I tried had the 18-70 and this was supplemented by a 70-300 sigma an excellent buy at £114 from jessops
Dont lose sight that many people myself included are only interested in better photos not the ultimate semi-professional results that many on the site aspire to,and achive

| | | Re: nikon D50 Not a problem for me, but most reviews I have read on the E500 come out really good including AP. It also gets Highly Recommended on DPreview. It has more features and modes than the Canon or Nikon and with the Oly/Leica/Panasonic/Sigma partnership the future is looking very good.
Just can't wait fot my Bigme to arrive.
