| | | Re: barn owl photos Lovely shots Humbug!
I have just one photo of a wild barn owl which was taken at my local nature reserve just after sunset. I boosted the ISO to 800 but was still under-exposed at 1/60th of a second. I managed to fire off three shots but two of them were completely hopeless and the one I kept is nowhere near as good as yours.

I've been photographing my local barn owls too, trying to get the "ultimate" pic before a new housing estate gets built on their territory.

just thought i'd share these pics with you, i know there not the best pics but it was quite an experience being in the presence of such a magnificent bird which came and checked me out quite a few times and didn't seem to mind me being there.
I'd be very happy to have got those shots, they are both really good.

i was really chuffed to get these shots and filled my card with shots in about 10 mins .
too many to post, i know they're protected and one should not disturb them if you can help it but i went back a couple of weeks ago just to see if this was a nest site and saw two chicks peering out the hole and the female sitting on top of the wall. fantastic.
this photo is the right way up!! |

this photo is the right way up!! | Hi Humbug,
Lovely shots indeed.
As already pointed out, you must not disturb these birds at a nest site (without a schedule 1 licence), or risk falling foul of the law. Disturbance can be something as simple as a bird seeing you & deviating off of its flight path. It is best to be well away from the nest site & well hidden. This will also allow you to capture more natural behaviour.
Hope you don't see this as a moan, more rather a warning as nobody wants to see you end up in trouble.
Regards Rob.
