Sigma 50-500mm

Just interested what people think of this lens as i am using a sigma 80-400mm on my d80.My local camera shop is closing down and one is for sale at £500 is it worth buying at that price as i could use it on my d200 for in the hide at martin mere.Thanks bryan

I'm a user of this lens, and a fine one it is too. In my opinion the best quality zoom for anyway near the price.
It's not as good as a prime lens, there again no zoom is, nor does it cost anyway near as much as a prime.
It's a heavy lens, but not THAT heavy. If I can manage it, just about anyone else can.
The price is good, although I'd be tempted to offer less!

Hi Bryan. I'd agree with Graham about offering less. There's loads of new ones on e-bay for £500 (this includes delivery), so you may be able to argue that £500 isn't a sale price . I know shops have larger overheads etc, but it's worth a try !

I still can't help thinking you will be disappointed with the extra range of the "bigma" compared to the 80-400mm and may wiser looking for a good prime instead.

after much thought and a look around this site i decided to buy one from hong kong, ordered it on sunday night and it arrived just now(wed)p.m. so i'm off to play!!!

Would like a prime lens a nikon 500mm but a slight problem price i think the 50-500mm isn't bad at that price.I can get it for 475.Thanks bryan

Go for it Bryan, I bought a 50 - 500mm just three weeks ago and it hasn't been off the EOS 20D since!, its a fantastic lens for the price and with very little practice produces excellent quality images.
You only have to look through the gallerys here on WAB and see just how many stunning images have been taken with this lens, it really does speak volumes for its versitility and image quality.
