Nikon D70s

It seems most of you DSLR users on this forum use Canon - 20d etc. But have any of you had experience of the Nikon D70s. I need to update this year and since I already own a few Nikon lenses, the best idea seems to stick with Nikon, especially as I can't afford the D200 or a complete Canon outfit. Any advice, would be much appreciated.

Re: Nikon D70s

The D70S fits my hands is reassuringly solid takes beautiful images, all in all it performs very well the kit lense is a cracker (although I did consider the sigma 28-200 as an all purpose job) and I teamed it up with a sigma 70-300
Being over 21 and used to 35mm slr I think I was a bit(ok a lot)up tight at first
but having used the minolta D50 and the 350 and 100 canons I just let the quality feel seduce me

Re: Nikon D70s

Alan - I was in a similar situation to yourself, having used Nikon 35mm SLR's for years I had some good Nikon fit lenses so the D70s was my target DSLR when it came to upgrading, that was until I tried the Canon EOS 20D!

To be honest for just a few more more quid the Canon is a far better option, its built beautifully, handles like a dream, plus there's just far more technology for the money, and with being a semi-pro spec model it's not a camera that you will out-grow.

Ok, there's still the lens issue, but you have to remember that in all probability they are not DX optimised lenses anyway, most of mine weren't, and as I still have my Nikon f80 to use them with I figured that it was time for a complete change, and looking back on it now I'm so glad I made that choice.

I hope this serves to help you and doesn't confuse the issue too much!!

Thanks for that fourwings, I just need to have a whip-around now so I can afford it. Either that or nip down to a securicor depot.

Re: Nikon D70s

The slightly older version, the Nikon D70, was my first DSLR purchase. I am still not sure what you get for the "s"!

I am extremely pleased with this camera but then I have nothing to directly compare it with.

I currently pair it with a Sigma 80-400mm lens and also my Nikon scope via the Nikon attachment .... details on my website.

Some of the results can be seen in the WAB gallery and again on my website.

I am not sure how much this helps and I recall that when I was considering my options, there were definite Nikon loyalists and definite Canon loyalists which all makes things very confusing.

Whatever you choose, I wish you luck .... just make sure we see the results in the gallery!

Richard

Re: Nikon D70s

The "s" addressed some of the focus "quirks" the D70 was reckoned to have, and a larger lcd screen. Many people reckon the D50 offers better bang per buck though.

I know what you mean about the D50 but they also say it's all plastic!

Hi Alan
I could do with a new lens for my 20D, do you think your local securicor depot would have enough for your camera and my lens if I come with you.

Same with the Minolta 5D I have Alan, but believe me, it feels solid enough! Unless you're intending to run through warzones with it, that is

Re: Nikon D70s

My belief is that its not the camera (Canon 20D, Nikon D70 etc) but the person who's taking the picture. Whatever you do, I'm sure you wont be disappointed.

Re: Nikon D70s

The camera helps though Mark, in as much as if you can't get on with the feel, or layout, you'll either not use it fully, or worse, not use it at all! A few of the manufacturers budget dslrs are built for smaller hands.

Re: Nikon D70s

Well I cant comment on camera layout on different cameras because I've only used the Canon 300D. Nikon is a respected make so it will be interesting to see the results in the gallery.

Re: Nikon D70s

Well it seems after discussing which camera to get, I have given my brother ideas! It now seems likely that he's now going to upgrade from a D70 to a D200, so wants me to buy his D70 off him (at a vast discount of course!). The D200 looks like a really good bit of kit at around £1200 for the body. So it seems for now at least, I'll probably go with the D70

By the way, I'm an 'Officer' now!

Re: Nikon D70s

There is a software update to bring the D70 up to "S" specification

Yeah I believe the firmware upgrade addresses some autofocus issues as well as improving the menu. Apart from this the only difference would be the LCD and battery.

I think I'll settle for the D70, at a 'bargain' price. Though he hasn't said what he wants for it yet!

Re: Nikon D70s

so what did you do Alan ?

the D70 is a great camera, you wont be dissapointed with it
I had one for about 18 months, just flogged it on ebay for £370 body only and bought the D200 (it feels more expensive, it looks more expensive, IT IS MORE EXPENSIVE .. the pictures aren't massively better tho)

testament to the D70

Re: Nikon D70s

My D70s would have been a Canon 20d but for the price, but having a mate with a 350d
HE cannot see the difference in quality in the pics we take and the colours always seem better on the D70s,the handling is certainly better
