Basic tutorials

I've been meaning to write some VERY basic photography articles for ages. Something aimed at people just ready to take the step from "Point & Click" to taking more control of what they are doing.

I was thinking at a very basic look at things like...

Exposure and it's components (Aperture, shutter speed, ISO, exposure compensation) and maybe a little on how Aperture and focal length control depth of field.

Good idea? Sux?

Re: Basic tutorials

Definitely a good idea. There are plenty of users here that would like to know the basics explained in a clear and simple manner.
Another idea would be an explanation of how to prepare a photograph so it looks it's best when uploaded, even down to how to upload. I know of plenty of viewers that are intimidated about the process, we shouldn't assume everyone that visits this site is computer savvy enough to upload. I've help a few, a general guide I'm sure would be welcome.
I'd be prepared to help in that aspect, if required.

Re: Basic tutorials

I was asked to write an article about my photography last year for another site. The link is here if that's acceptable?

Excellent article. Well worth looking at, especially for the Kingfisher images!

Great images and sound advice Kev. Good to see there's someone else who still shoots in manual mode! It's still the most accurate and helps you to uderstand what the camera is doing.

Yes please...I have only had my nikon 2 weeks and I'm sure I can' be the only one that's learning what everything does.Any help would be great, such as basic settings for exposure, shutter speed and stuff like that,Also uploads as I'm never sure of the best way to resize stuff and still end up with something bigger than a stamp..!

Sharon, there's no such thing as basic settings. Program modes try to get optimum settings, scene modes try to tweak them, eg, portrait mode may use a large aperture f5.6, and set the colour modes in camera to warm up skin tones. If you're shooting a bird taking off from the water, do you want a fast shutter speed to freeze the action, or a slow shutter speed to give creative blur? And from your uploads, that learning curve is not scaring you

As for resizing, depending on software, try resizing image to 72dpi, longest side about 800 pixels (other side will resize itself) and use a save for web/email option. If you can change the compression/quality, adjust slightly and should bring your upload to about 100k.

Re: Basic tutorials

Heres a link to the help for beginer photographers bit of my employers website, which includes some advice sheets ( I am working on more) and links to other helpful sites. http://www.theparkstrust.com/parks%2...e.asp?ID=34245

I would be happy to email the sheets over to be linked onto WAB if someone tells me where and how

Re: Basic tutorials

This is something that would obviously be of great use to people like me!!
The links are great very useful. But it would also be nice to have an article on the site written by someone or a group of people on the site maybe with links to threads running similar topics. Maybe this is too complex to produce but at least if an article is actually on the site, you have a question you can maybe even ask the authour or highlight the bits and start a new thread ' on the advice sheet NO 2 (for example) it says do this... what is the best thing to do if it's raining etc....

So through my waffling here my main point I guess is if you have a question and can refer to an on site article, more people are likely to respond with help than if you refer to a link that not many have read and maybe only one or two have relatively quick recal of the relevent content? Just an idea

Re: Basic tutorials

I know not everyone has Photoshop (due to the hefty price tag) but a lot of people have Photoshop Elements as its been given away with so many products and offers.

I was thinking of writing a few tutorials for bringing the best out of under/over exposed pictures, cropping images, resizing images, rotating, correcting the horizon etc.

How many times have you taken a great picture that you probably can't get again to have something like holding the camera at an odd angle ruin it? Or even want something removed from the picture like a telegraph pole?
