The sensor that takes the image on a DSLR covers a much smaller area than the old film cameras, so when you attach a lens you get what is called a crop factor. The Canon 350D and 20D are 1.6x where as the Nikon D50 is 1.5x and just to make things even more confusing, Olympus use a four thirds system so theirs is 2x. What this means is that when you add a 100-300mm zoom lens to a 350D with 1.6x crop factor it becomes a 160-480mm. This is very useful for wildlife but not for landscape photography where a wider angle is needed. The Olympus system means attaching a 50-150mm gives you the equivalent of 100-300mm lens.
