Is my Squash done?

I posted a while ago regarding the lonely squash I have growing in my garden. It's still going! Can you pick them before they're completely orange? This is what mine looks like now:



And here's the rest of what's left of the plant! The root is at the top of the photo, I'm surprised it's still going!



Also I heard the roots need to go fairly deep, mine go about 3-4inches.

Looks about done to me Nige, I’d bring it in before we get any frosts, keep it in a cool dry place and it will keep for a couple of months if you want, I’d have strait into the kitchen and get cooking myself. I didn’t grow any this year, my soil is a bit to dry for them, but my son grew loads on his allotment sand he harvested them a couple of weeks ago.
