| | | Problem with my nuts I have two nut trees which (last year and this) have varied profoundly in their crop.
On the left the harvest, so far, from Cosford (a cobnut); on the right my complete harvest from Kentish Cob (a filbert). Growing in a shrubbery fairly close to each other; had more or less the same treatment - what's wrong?
Is the Kentish Cob perhaps not strong enough for Yorkshire hardships? |

| | | Re: Problem with my nuts Squirrels with a preference?
I have a Corkscrew Hazel in the front garden which besides being ornamental also produces nuts.... unfortunately the pesky Grey Squirrels which aren't too much trouble for most of the year seem to come from miles around and take the nuts just before I consider them ripe enough to pick myself...
Although looking at your harvest maybe I wasn't too early after all when I chased off the grey one t'other morning and picked as many as I could reach, just so him and his little pals didn't get them!

| | | Re: Problem with my nuts I used to worry about collecting too early - now I bring them in as soon as a few have fallen: they ripen and, I've recently discovered, half-ripe ones are quite tasty - creamy more than nutty!
Still, back to the problem, squirrels used to be a problem but they've largely disappeared from our neighbourhood - shame. |

I don't know but with fruit trees you get a glut one year and not a lot the next could this just be natural.
I agree the nuts taste good when half ripe I have a little twisted hazel and this year for the first time it had a few nuts on it the squirrels have not found it yet but I won't begrudge them if they turn up the wood mice might be more of a problem. |

| | | Re: Problem with my nuts Last 6 year the hazels around here have varied each year. This year they have produced overweight Squirrels, last skinny ones, the year before a crop, but nothing to jump around in the trees about. So I reckon it just is. Some years fat, some years lean.
I got about a pound of unripes, tasty tho'. The Squigs had all the rest.

| | | Re: Problem with my nuts Instructions
1Plant walnut full sun in rich countries clay loam soil with a pH greater than 7, according to the Research Center Owners of Ontario. The soil should be well drained and mixed with organic matter.
2Water walnut in times of drought. Adequate rainfall will be fine for the tree, as long as mulch is in place to maintain soil moisture. However, if you just planted a tree, water it frequently during his first summer.
3Apply mulch such as pine straw or bark around the tree to retain moisture and absorb rain to keep the soil well drained. Do not place mulch against the trunk of the tree. This can cause the tree has basal rot.
4Fertilize with a slow release fertilizer application of 0.5 kg per inch of diameter of the tree every year. It is best to fertilize in the spring. Sprinkle fertilizer under the canopy around the walnut sure you do not receive any fertilizer in the trunk of the tree. Water fertilized area after fertilizer salts to not damage the tree roots and nutrients reaching the roots. Water frequently for a few weeks after application to ensure that the roots receive fertilizer.
5Control pests such as caterpillars and scales through the application of horticultural oil to the tree or an insecticide. If you notice a color or sunken bark, walnut may have canker disease. According to the University of Florida, this disease can cause tree death. Cut out infected branches to keep the tree healthy. |
