Whats wrong with this tree?

A number of Horse Chestnut trees in our area seem to be suffering from this unhealthy pealing bark, what is it? drought, disease, or pest?

It could be the Phytophthora Bleeding Canker disease, or then again could be naturally shedding its bark?

Thanks Dave, I think you are right, I Googled it an it looks the same.

I had a horse chestnut with bleeding canker, it looked as though it was bleeding rust. I don't see any of this on the picture, although it is pretty small.

No sign of canker from that. With Pseudonomas syringae you would expect to see orange to black lesions bleeding out onto the bark up to about 2-3metres. That looks dry to me although it may progress if tree stressed (leaf miner and/or leaf fungus).

I Don't remember seeing any orange or rust coloured oozing, I have seen black. The trees are 28 years old so quite big, not the biggest or oldest around. I will see if I have any other pictures from another angle.
