Your tale reminds me of a recent visit to a very old listed farmhouse near me that has lain empty since the last occupant left to fight in the Battle of Waterloo. There is a bread oven next to the range and I spotted a small wrap of silver foil around the corner, a place that no one could see into unless they stuck their head into the oven.
Thinking it was stash of drugs hidden in this remote place, I cautiously removed and unwrapped the parcel.
In it there was a £1 , one 10p and one 2p coins!
I'd love to know why it was there.
Hawthorn are drought tolerant as you've noticed. Many are planted on raised banks which dry quickly. When the hedge in front of my grandfathers house in Frampton on Severn, Gloucestershire was grubbed out by the new owners, they found an unexpoded mortar bomb which had lain there since WWII.

However when you come to sell the house a surveyor may take different view and it may well adversely affect your sale.
