| | | Re: Manage or leave alone My attitude is similar to Debs.
But I don't have any particular 'conservation' aims. As far as I'm concerned, my garden is an area in which I am the top species and alpha male - I play god and decide what's welcome or not - Most species are welcome except cats and snakes and they get removed. My garden is near a small chalk river and a corridor of trees so there is much wildlife overspill into my zone. As my wildlife pond is small it's necessary to maintain a degree of balance. For example, I don't mind blanket weed or duckweed as it provides for other creatures and anyway I can easily keep it in check. I have a log pile and area of long grass and a rockery around the wildlife (no fish) pond with alpine plants. Low maintenance and sorry but I don't care whether any species are native or not - I'm not a conservationist.
So, I just offer a happy place to share with some wildlife for our mutual benefit. I have a very well stocked bird table too.

As I see it -: with the exceptions of water and places too cold for trees, all of the uk is trying to turn into a woodland. It even managed this after each Ice Age.
We sometimes don`t want woodland in the place that we live or that progress is too slow for us to wait. In this case we need to mange the land.
If you are happy to allow the arboreal progression to move at it`s own pace -nothing wrong with that- then leave be. If not -that`s ok too- then you need to devise a management plan to achieve the goal that you have set.
Just a matter of choice really.
