When we moved into our new house last year it had a pond but not really an ideal one for wildlife, essentially a square bucket with water in (although there is a healthy layer of silt and rotting vegetation at the bottom as it was placed directly under an apple tree.
I did a little bit of work on it mainly putting in a slope for escape purposes and cleaning some of the gunk from the bottom (not all but the rotting vegetation seemed to be overpowering the pond) and adding an oxygenating plant. We had a resident frog last year and he came back this year also. We never had any spawn but I put this down to the pond not being ideal conditions.
Most of the other life has been hoverfly larvae and mossie/midge larvae.
Anyhoo, I feel it is time to put in a des res! I am planning a new pond not massive (approx 1m x 2m) but hopefully more condusive to wildlife (gentle slopes plants etc.).
I will be doing the constuction over the next couple of months. Ideally I would like to fill in the old pond around the same time as it will be a good place to put any left over soil.
However, I wouldn't want to do so if there is a chance of harming anybody who might be living there!
My plan was to move some of the water, silt and general detritus into the 'new' pond to help kick start it. Then put the rest of the 'gunk' near the edge of the new pond so that anybody living there could migrate to pastures new. I hope the frog will notice the wonders of the new pond and move in under his own steam
So apologies for the long ramble but would this be ok to do such a move in the next few weeks or should I leave the old pond as is until much later in the year?
