Making pond bigger

Want to extend my existing pond, well make it bigger but unsure how to start, Will do it later in the year as frogs will be visiting soon. any advice on what I do with existing pond water as I develop pond. Thanks When do you think is the best time

can you not add a second pond? that way it will colonise from the first, then plant a bog garden between them or put a good log over the join, i did one where i just made a flat bridge between them, the water from both went slightly under each side and it looked like one big pond.
