I'm hoping that very soon this 'working against nature' will become unfashionable.
Acherontia | I'm going to show Dad your garden in an attempt to make him garden a bit more sympathetically (what is it with people and their perfectly angular hedges? Drives me nuts! )

My neighbours cut down their apple tree and replaced it with a bench on gravel and then paved half their garden and put a massive (empty ) shed down. The one flower bed contains a couple of non-native evergreens and there is a small scalped lawn.
My garden: small patio with pots, lawn cut not too short, native wildflower/grass bit left uncut, apple tree & the rest majority native plants (or plants that wildlife like) and a pond.
I get loads of birds, 9 species within an hour today, plus lots of bugs, insects, beetles & creepie-crawlies. My neighbour puts of bird food but it isn't taken and everything just looks 'sterile'.
I know which I prefer

The theory is (I think) that the moon governs the tides and it has a similar effect on water trapped in the soil,so by planting at a certain time in the moons' phase your plants or seeds get access to more water naturally.
I believe harvesting at the appropriate time is just as important, I know it sounds quite complicated but now that she's started doing it she's not going back ,because her crops are so good.

Barbara | Yes, we're talking about the same thing. I have sections in some of my books on Lunar Gardening but I've yet to try it. The fact that some RHS gardens use the method with success gives it validity though .
