WAB 2009 Tallest Sunflower Competition?

After the (sort of) success of last years tallest sunflower competition this is the new and improved 2009 comp, no prizes or anything just for a bit of fun and if nothing else the bee's, hoverflies etc will love you........

So anyone up for it then? I will be growing "Russian Giant" seeds which I have some spare so if anyone want's a few then PM your address and I will send you some. I've also noticed that there is a variety called "Kong" which might be worth a shot too!!!!!!!!

Rules:

Grow the biggest Sunflower that you can!!

I am growing Stewy's Russian Giants.
They are planted in peat pots and in the greenhouse.

Bring it on

Re: WAB 2009 Tallest Sunflower Competition?

I picked some seeds up today, so I'd like to join in too please.

Is there an 'end' date or does it just continue until they've all stopped growing?

Hi FatGit, no end date as such, once your BEAST has reached it's maximum size then take a measurement and post it on here and when we have all the results then we can crown the 2009 champion!! ie me!!

think I might have to get some of those! Says on my packet of Russian Giants that they grow 2.4 to 3m (8-10ft). Mine reached 6.4ft last year in a fairly small pot.

Re: WAB 2009 Tallest Sunflower Competition?

I'd like to join in! Trouble is, the sunniest part of the garden is also the place which has the poorest soil.....heavy clay. Nothing except Acer likes it there! Still, if I stock up on chicken poo, everything should be ok, yes Stewy?

Perhaps I ought to have some of your seeds Stewy, and some of the Kongs from Robin, see which do best?

(I may also get my brother growing some in his garden )

Re: WAB 2009 Tallest Sunflower Competition?

Thanks for that Stewy lost one over by the Sky dish last week had not tied it into the wall properly and winds got it and broke it at the base,
Will not need to buy sunflower seed for a while with the amount of sunflowers about the garden back and frontin the back they reached about 8 ft 9" high

Re: WAB 2009 Tallest Sunflower Competition?

Mine is also around 8' 8", the flower head is about 4" across.

Just a thought, but where do we measure up to? The top of the green stem or the top of the flower petals?

Re: WAB 2009 Tallest Sunflower Competition?

I measured from the ground to approx the top of the petals, I think if it runs next year then a few more guidelines/rules etc need to be sorted, possibly even a small prize!!!!Lol

Wonder where the Guinness folk measure too??

Re: WAB 2009 Tallest Sunflower Competition?

Hmm! Just come back from a week's holiday and the person looking after such things omitted watering my sunflowers! They are now looking fairly sorry for themselves....
