Good point Galanthus, I don't have an awful lot of success with potted patio plants - although I don't know why - so maybe a good mulch in ordinary (albeit very poor (heavy clay)) would be better.... ??
I somehow don't think I am gonna win this one, lol!

| | | Re: WAB 2009 Tallest Sunflower Competition? I'm definately no expert but I think you'll find Sunflowers have a long "tap root" so planting in a pot is not so good.Wait until all chance of frost is gone then put your seeds straight in to good rich soil. When they come up try to water around the plant not on it,and when they get bigger stake them well ,I've used bean sticks in the past.Make a little"moat "around each plant and water into it.They like lots of food if you want them to be huge. The flower heads can get very heavy so tie the plants well right up the length of the stem.Even if yours doesn't get very tall the birds will love you for the seeds. Hope anybody interested can understand this ,seems a bit garbled to me ,sorry. |

| | | Re: WAB 2009 Tallest Sunflower Competition? I going to have a go! I am growing my first garden flowers from seeds this year, so everything is an experiment, but fun too! I pruned two shrubs in the garden last year, one has grown stronger, the other is... well...not healthy (but it was a 'present' from the mother in law so I am not too upset |

I'm having a hard time imaginig just how bad that must have been. Count me in too, but first I'll have to source some seeds! I'm also one of the novices so just getting them to germinate will be a bonus! |
