WAB 2009 Tallest Sunflower Competition?

I'd like to join in! Trouble is, the sunniest part of the garden is also the place which has the poorest soil.....heavy clay. Nothing except Acer likes it there! Still, if I stock up on chicken poo, everything should be ok, yes Stewy?

Perhaps I ought to have some of your seeds Stewy, and some of the Kongs from Robin, see which do best?

(I may also get my brother growing some in his garden )

Nah, I don't think it will matter to honest, once your sunflower has reached it's maximum height then post it on here and when all the results are in then we can crown the 2009 champ!!!

How will we know when it's at it's max? I haven't grown them before...

When the head is in full bloom then it's not likely to get any taller but I may be wrong!! Any expert Sunflower growers out there???

Presumably when the head is in full bloom, it may tilt with the weight. Are we allowed to prop it up? Do sunflowers need staking at all? I've seen fields and fields of them in France, so I am guessing that generally speaking they wouldn't, but it's very windy down here in Hastings, lol!

Yes, they will need staking or they could snap in strong winds, it would be ideal if you can plant them next to or near something that that you can tie them too and also facing full sun which will help the little darlings grow to astronomic heights!!!!

Don't forget some chicken poo!!!
