| | | Drop in Blue tit numbers Hi everyone I know this has been discussed before but now I'm spending more time watching the garden birds I've really noticed a big drop in blue tit numbers .
This time last year we had a good number visit each day but only see one a day now.
I guess its connected to the drop in Butterfly numbers as the chicks are fed caterpillars.
We do have more Goldfinches and the sparrows are doing well.
I've kept the feeders going all year but only spend much time watching them this time of year when there are no butterflies or Dragonflies

| | | Re: Drop in Blue tit numbers Two grotty summers have not helped their numbers but I think that they can bounce back quickly if there is an improvement in the weather and food supply. Like everyone and everything else, I'm desperate to have a good summer. The last 2 years showed only the odd good day that teased of improvement before dropping into dull and wet weeks.
Like the Blue Tits- we're owed a decent run at summer next year.

| | | Re: Drop in Blue tit numbers Blue tits seemed to have done very well around here. I know of several nests last spring which turned out good numbers of fledglings.
My feeders have at least a dozen bluetits on for most of the day and as these won't be the same bluetits all day long there must be plenty about. |

| | | Re: Drop in Blue tit numbers About the same here, S. Devon, and one pair used the nesting box. But I am seeing an increase in Great Tits over the past couple of years. Wonder if they will eventually force out the Blues?
They both eat a lot of peanuts so at the moment there is plenty of food for all. |

| | | Re: Drop in Blue tit numbers We have a plentiful supply of Blue tits up here but House Sparrows, Thrush and Starling numbers have dropped.
I read a report that people monoblocking their gardens has significantly contributed to the reduction in the Sparrow population.

| | | Re: Drop in Blue tit numbers It does appear so to be the same around here as well, with numbers been very low ,but as you have mentioned goldfinch and most of the other popular finches
are doing well here to,i had a brief visitor last week in the garden,it was a cock pheasant,he did not hang around for long though, might see him again if he is lucky enough to avoid flying over the guns on boxing day. |
