| | | Euonymus europaeus (Spindle) Poisonous? Hi guys,
Really loving the autumnal colours of this tree/shrub ... thinking of getting one for the garden.
I have read that the fruits and seeds are very poisonous to us.
Does this include animals as well though? In particular birds?
I'd hate to attract birds to a grizzly fate of tummy ache or worse... |

| | | Re: Euonymus europaeus (Spindle) Poisonous? According to Snow & Snow "Birds and Berries" the seed is poisonous to man, and is not taken by birds. The pulp however is nutritious and they list the following birds feeding on Spindle in the Chilterns (pp. 81-83): Blackbird, Song Thrush, Robin, Blackcap, Great Tit, Blue Tit, and Long-tailed Tit.

As far as I know it is not poisonous to birds. The flowers attracts insects including aphids which may attract insect-feeding birds. With this, the autumn colours and the fact it's native sounds like a winner to me

I've just ordered one, so hopefully by next autumn it'll have grown to become a regular Robin hang-out then! |
