| | | Waterfall in Graden - great A few years ago we built a waterfall out of the soil that we dug out to make a pond. It was very hard work but it was cheaper to build the waterfall than to hire skips and trudge backwards and forwards with all the soil
We wanted it to be wildlife friendly and made shallow edges, lots of plants and fish although a heron regularly feeds on the goldfish we have been given quite a few large koi which luckily the heron seems to leave alone and are now quite large. This photo was taken about 6 months after it was built and it very quickly settled down.
The reason for writing this thread is that if you are thinking about building a pond I would strongly recommend building a waterfall it attracts so many wonderful birds and it is great fun watching them having a bath.
I have just taken some poor quality photos through the kitchen window but felt I needed to share them with you! This is the bluetit having is bath
This is a bird im not fond of but still fun to watch
and this is some video of my favourite regular visitor which I have posted before but relevant to this thread YouTube - Goldcrest bathing in Waterfall
We also have a wagtail that comes everyday but I havnt got a photo of him handy at the moment.
In the summer there are loads of dragonflies, southern hawkers etc on the pond. Frogspawn and frogs/toads are always about and the other day were jumping in front of the lawn mower
The pond gives hours of pleasure and was worth all the hard work
Linda

We're thinking of digging in here for a few more years to weather this credit crunch so that sounds a good idea. Our old pond is crumbling away so a wildlife pond and waterfall is on the cards.

Your video of the Goldcrest bathing reminded me of a lovely experience I had a few years ago. I turned a bend in a path in Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk, and there in front of me were a small group of Goldcrests and Coal Tits taking it in turns to bathe in a large puddle. Two or three at a time would bathe, while the others waited patiently in the bushes either side. I was stood in plain view and only a few yards away, but was able to watch them for several minutes before they moved on. |
