| | | Your Garden Their Last Hope More and more gardens are being built on,large orchard gardens that supported
a wide variety of wildlife are being sold off as building plots forcing birds and mammals to look elsewhere for the peace and food they need.
Pretty soon all the bird feeders and mammal trays in the country will not be enough, there will be nowhere left to breed except for a few scattered Trust Lands and Organic farms,
Do people not realise that wildlife is more important than money in the long term

| | | Re: Your Garden Their Last Hope Although you are right Nightshade it's a fact of life that mankind will (nearly) always put it's welfare above that of all other creatures.............if that means bulldozing and tarmacing over the countryside then that is what is going to happen.
The world runs on money unfortunately..........you might get a few who will try to change that or who think differently but they are a minority voice and until the whole world wakes up to what is happening to our countryside or even our Planet then it's not going to change.
The world is full of injustice and this is just another example. |

This is that capitalists want people to believe.
It is easier to say that worlds runs on money and stop of fight against people that want to destroy more wild places. Try to change mentalities and try to do something is always more difficult.
200 years ago it was normal children as young as 4 were working during hours in factories. They could die and being replaced without any problem. Today it sounds abhorrent...could we do something today for tomorrow more wild places will be respected and protected??
Nowadays the pretty traditional english gardens are being replaced by horrid pebbles to put the 4X4 and more cars in front of the house. But we could change that..... |

| | | Re: Your Garden Their Last Hope There are a few, not many mind, construction firms that have realised that green space is so important. They are at least beginning to add things like roof gardens to sky scrapers, window boxes and green open spaces in between structures. Once the idea becomes'hip', more will follow.I do speak with experience here to because my husband has been in the construction industry for 28 years and there is a definite move towards being greener. As he said, green space and the recycling of old materials would have had no consideration in planning 10 years ago but now the change is coming. Whether it is too late to reverse the process of species extinction, remains to be seen. Sadly, probably not. ww |

It is easy to say because it is true unfortunately.
I'm not saying we shouldn't try to change views but as you say it is difficult.

Perhaps the only way forward is to subvert the system and make the green areas valuable - then the capitalist system will have to value them - and doing that turns on public perception - remember the CFCs campaign, no one thought that big companies could be forced into cfc free products but it was done, and it happened by consumer power - can we do thesame for the greenspace ?

It looks that new owners dont want to be bothered to take care of plants, so they just put pebbles in front of the house and leave a pot with a sad plant that it is replaced every time that die....and they are happy to have a big place for their 4 X 4 and the other cars. |

| | | Re: Your Garden Their Last Hope My back garden borders onto a large area of parkland. There has been a terrific amount of 'brownfield' infill going on in the area in the last couple of years. Old houses with large gardens being knocked down and blocks of flats being built in their place, taking up the whole of the plot of land.
I have noticed that the wildlife in my garden has increased considerably since the infill development started in earnest. So, I do all I can to encourage the wildlife. They have nowhere else to go. When you're hitting really high density housing (if the permitted minimum is 30 something per whatsit, we have areas nearby which reach 119 something per whatsit - serious overcrowding - the slums of tomorrow!). And, the more back gardens that are given over to housing, the bigger the detriment to our wildlife.
I think the really ironic thing is the 'payoff' developers give to the council when there's not enough garden left with these new blocks of flats so they give a one off payment to help the council with the costs of running local parks. Section 106 money or something like that.
I can see a time when no-one will have a garden at all. We'll all have to walk to the local park and be controlled and regimented in our meanderings through it. (Don't walk on this bit of the grass, no ball games etc.)
Hey ho!

More and more councils are staring to get proper qualified Ecologist and biodiversity officers who then have the knowledge (which is key) and the power to add ecological issues to the planning conditions and request thorough ecological assessment. Things are getting better if slowly - If only we could slow the obsession with development of brownfield the loss of which can be very difficult to mitigate. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
