| | | Tallest Sunflower Competition? Would anyone be up for a WAB tallest Sunflower competion? No prizes or nothing just for a bit of fun, you don't need much space, just a nice sunny corner in the garden would do. We could then post height's and pics possibly of the beasts once they are MASSIVE to see who is the winner.
I'll be sowing a few Russian Giant ( Helianthus annuus) seeds at the weekend to get mine started. I think it would be more fair if we all used the same Sunflower seeds ie Russian Giant. I've got a pack of 60 so if anyone wants a few seeds then give me a shout and I'll post some to you, if not then have a look in your garden centre or on the web.
Anyway, it was just an idea.

By pure fluke we had already picked up some seeds and they are already on their way to the sky.
First time i've grown them and not sure what to expect - I'm not really a gardener

| | | re: Tallest Sunflower Competition? Hmmmmm..........I was just about to say what a great idea and was off to get my seeds tomorrow..........but having seen that whopper of a sunflower , I don't think I have much chance at all now!! I've never even managed to grow one taller than me and I'm only 5ft 2!
So........I have to ask...........what's your secret ?? Any tips for the more vertically challenged sunflower growers amongst us???
I think Miracle Grow will have to be an option worth considering this year!
Gloves are off!
Suzanne
Btw Stewy, how tall was it? |

| | | re: Tallest Sunflower Competition? Hi Monkster, I'm not sure on the height although it should be written down somewhere but god knows where!!
No real special tricks or nothing I think it's just the strain of the seed (Russian Giant). Sow in pots and when they get to a good size dig a hole and bung them in, ideally next to something that you can strap/tye them to.
(PS you will also need a ladder) |

I'm thinking that I must have had the wrong sunflower seeds in the past then.
Although I'm looking forward to great things now and I hope that lots of us will have a go this year, it'll be interesting to see how we all get on!
