| | | plants from supermarkets As a result of another thread mentioning the quality of plants from stores against nurseries, I wondered about people's experiences of these once they are in the ground.
I bought a Virginia Creeper from Morrisons for £1.49 two years ago, just to see what happened - it reached the gutter last summer, and is glorious!
Same experience with a Graham Thomas honeysuckle...
Seems to me, if you are a bit selective, the supermarkets can provide some bargains - like seed packets for 59p (with slightly less seeds, which actually i prefer...)

| | | Re: plants from supermarkets From a plant point of view there shouldn't really be a problem with them - just check them carefully before buying to make sure they are healthy. Lack of proper after care is often a cause of plants not taking, rather than poor quality plants. I think maybe it's best to buy from small nurseries as it's more fair tradey. |

| | | Re: plants from supermarkets I often buy end of season plants from our local supermarket and although they might look a bit scraggy when I get them, and perhaps need a bit more tlc to begin with, I have never been disapointed and another big plus is that they are much cheaper |

| | | Re: plants from supermarkets I often buy a cheap packet of seeds from Wilkos and just chuck them straight onto the garden for a quick bit of colour. Also Tesco did some very good herbs last year; I got lavender, rosemary, various thymes, oregano and basil and they have all done very well. |

Not bad for about £1.50..or less. |

| | | Re: plants from supermarkets You can find good healthy attractive plants, shrubs and trees from Supermarkets but one thing you'll be hard to find at these places is plant knowledge. It's a good nursery that will be happy to help out when it comes to planting, pruning, pests and diseases and getting hold of plants that you are particularly wanting etc etc! Small local independent businesses should be getting our custom too, please don't forget them for the sake of supermarkets cheap deals. After saying all that my Aconite did do well
