| | | Bulb Planting Calendar I've been searching the web for a "bulb planting calendar" to see what various flower bulbs i can plant at certain months of the year and also, what months they will flower.
I'm very new to gardening and understand there must be hundreds of different flowers, but i thought i may have found a "basic guide" as to what to plant and when, and when it will flower.
Any help would be appreciated

Dave | Hi Dave,
Welcome to WAB. For a very simple guide to bulbs see: Royal Horticultural Society - Gardening Advice: Bulb Planting
For the scale of just what 'bulbous plants' encompasses see: International Bulb Society - Research, Conservation, and Culture of Flowering Bulbs and clink through the links to their Gallery where they list hundreds of species.
Not all bulbous plants are valuable for a 'wildlife garden' in the UK - hopefully someone here may have a 'short list' of the most useful.

| | | Re: Bulb Planting Calendar In 2006 I planted Bluebells, Snowdrops and Daffodils, which I dug up from a small wood where Glasgow Celtic were building their new training ground. This area was marked off and I think it is going to be utilised by them in some capacity, so they will eventually be cutting down trees and levelling the ground. All are doing well. |

Dave | Hi Dave
Welcome to WAB. May I recommend "The Bulb Expert" - one of the 'Experts' range of books by Dr D G Hessayon and available from most garden centres and bookshops for about £6 or so.
It offers a good introduction to the world of bulbs and gives detailed advice on many species, including suggested planting times for each.
It's a great little book.

| | | Re: Bulb Planting Calendar A bit of general advice is to either set in the green - i.e. plants growing in pots or freshly excavated from the ground - or buy and plant harvested bulbs as early in the year as possible so that they spend as little time out of the ground as possible. Daffodils tend to be fairly reliable whenever they're available (but best got into the ground before frosts). Some things are notably unreliable from dried bulbs (such as snowdrops). Some bulbs/corms are not hardy and need digging up before winter. Some can be quite easily grown from seed (ornamental onions in particular) which is a cheap and easy way of acquiring big numbers although adding a year or two to your flowering cycle.
Good luck, let us know how you get on. Quote:
