| | | Magnolia Seed Pods For the first time ever, my magnolia is bearing seed pods. They are quite spectacular things....
I wonder if they will germinate if I plant them. Anyone have experience with them?

| | | Re: Magnolia Seed Pods I noticed these in the garden the other day and took a while to realise what they were! A grey squirrel was quicker on the uptake - I saw one scurrying off across the lawn with a whole pod in its mouth.

| | | Re: Magnolia Seed Pods I have just looked them up in my book and it says to sow them in peaty compost in a cold frame. They take 12-18 months to germinate!
I did not realise that squirrels would eat them. If that is the case, the squirrels will probably demolish them before I get any planted.
They look a bit like smarties, actually.

| | | Re: Magnolia Seed Pods We have a huge Magnolia and it has only set seed once in the ten years or so we've been here. Not this year but two years ago (?) - since I'd never seen seeds before I thought they were galls ....
