| | | Compost query I decided to pot up some violas yesterday and was using this year's commercial compost from a bag which has been left outside, under trees. As I dug into the compost I became aware of several clear jelly like balls, about the size of small pearls. Has anyone any idea what they are. I did pick out those I could find, but am not sure if they might do any damage to plants, if left in the compost.
Cheers.

| | | Re: Compost query This might be a silly suggestion but I just Googled snail eggs and had a look at some pics
Some of the jelly bundles of eggs actually look very similar to the water retaining crystals you can get in some composts ... they swell and look just like the bundles of jelly that house the eggs ...

| | | Re: Compost query Depends on how large pearls are - very variable but the ones I've seen have always been much larger than mollusc eggs! I can see the similarity in appearance but it's not a very good size estimation - try millimetres or even fractions of an inch! |

| | | Re: Compost query Thanks for your replies folks - I decided to pick those jelly balls I could find out of the compost before using, just in case they are slugs or snail eggs. Maybe I should have put one aside in a box with a little compost to see what developed.

| | | Re: Compost query Definitely slug or snail eggs...if you live on chalk more likely snails and if not then slugs but this is by no means a hard and fast rule. The eggs look alike. Just put them on the compost heap and whatever they turn into they'll help with the composting process! | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
