| | | Suggestions please! Well I've been looking at this gap for some time now but just can't decide what to put in it so any ideas?
Here's a couple of piccies....
The Mahonia is being pulled out (possibly today) as I hate it so it's just got to go!!! You'll see we have the gate on the right hand side so I need something that won't get too wide. Maybe I could fit 2 trees/shrubs in that spot?
Ideally I'd like something evergreen as most of the rest of that strip is eg. privet, eucalyptus and fir tree, and maybe something native would be good. It get's the sun practially all day from around 10am onwards if that helps.
Thankies in advance! |

Sounds good to me! You'll have to prune it back each year, so it won't overwhelm access via the gate.
But they'll benefit from pruning. You can prune back hard and they'll soon fill the gap again.

| | | Re: Suggestions please! Hmmm... but I've already got a huge Buddlea on the left of the arbour see....
and also a smaller one in the new middle border, just above the pink cosmos plant
Trouble is, is that when it gets chopped down I'll have to look at the fence again Suppose I could put a climber behind it?!? I'd like an ivy, but hubby won't let me put them on his lovely new fence Are there any nice evergreen climbers that I could use that would also perhaps encourage some wildlife too? |

| | | Re: Suggestions please! How about a Smoke Bush, a nice dark purple to contrast with the yellow shrub.
Cotinus Royal Purple.
Or, a slow growing Rhododendron. Evergreen. Good cover for Blackbirds and Thrushes.

Climber - Honeysuckle would be an obvious candidate
Shrub - what about a native rose? Dog rose or Field rose

| | | Re: Suggestions please! Phew I'm pooped! Got the blighter out and made an appointment with the chiropractor lol! Got a question though - I've got the stump and most of the roots out, it won't sprout from any roots I've left will it?
You all love your buddleia's don't ya lol! The little one I was talking about in my new middle border is a davidii 'Pink Delight' and although it's only small atm it's supposed to get to 10ft or so.
Keith - so is the Smoke Bush native then? Does it keep it's leaves? Thanks for the listing on Buddleia's btw, I'm still deliberating lol! Rhododendron.. now that might work as I have one in my front garden that is very happy (must be my soil) but they tend to grow outwards rather than up don't they
T2 - I've got a honeysuckle (original plant from when we moved in) on the right hand side of the gate. Despite hacking it down to the ground when the fencing was done it's revived itself and is doing well now see...
Maybe I could twist hubby's arm to build an archy thing across the top of the gate so it can spread over to the left? No, scrub that the sun is on the wrong side and I don't think it will grow 'left'
Hmmm... a native rose....?!? Going to have scrappy looking branches all winter though?
I know I'm being a pain, but keep trying lol! Buddleia's are winning atm - any other ideas? |
