| | | Slug deterrent I've just come across this tip on a gardening forum.
Apparently, unraveling one, or more, of those "wire-wool" type scouring pads and laying that around the plants is effective. I think I'll try it next year.

I'm currently using the beer method, but have been known to commit molluscide during night-time hunts! I lost all my heritage seed library french beans to them, as well as leek seedlings and other seeds that just germinated to find themselves as dinner. |

I shouldn't waste your time and money on the copper scouring pads, check this out,
Help please! - Slug pellet made it in to pond
It's more about slugs than fish, copper doesn't seem to work.
Max.

| | | Re: Slug deterrent I am an allotment gardener, so these slimey so and so's get on my nerves! I'm a member (under a different nick) of several gardening messageboards. There, they discuss slugs/snails several times a week! Some suggest using coffee, others garlic, then there are slug pellets certified for use in organic gardening.
Apart from beer, my method of molluscide involves a sharp implement. |

| | | Re: Slug deterrent I seem to get those really big brown slugs in my garden. I remember one late night checking to make sure everything was locked up outside, it was a little wet out and this brought them out in full force. I collected as many as i could and placed them on the top of the garage. it would take them awhile before they could make there way back down . Since that night the best deterrent i use is plain old cooking salt. just sprinkle some around your plants . It works very quickly , Its not harmful to your pets and its kind on your pocket too. |

Slugs, particularly large ones will travel surprisingly large distances - I wouldn't regard the garage roof as delaying their return for more than a couple of hours.
If you have a fairly well defended garden then hand gathering and disposal off site somewhere wild is the best. Molluscs will survive OK for several days in an old yoghurt pot or similar container so the product of an few evenings collecting can be kept until a convenient point. Those treated with salt are best flushed down the drain.
