| | | Re: Veg growing questions Sorry, not an expert but you can grow most of those (if not all) in pots.
Last Carol Klein series was really good and they showed examples of how to grow veg in small gardens / on raised platforms and stuff. Watch out for pests though, I turned my back and something ate my jalepenos when they were young plants.
Maybe get one of those small cold frame things for the cucumber?

| | | Re: Veg growing questions Hi Leon,
Does the seed pack not have sowing instructions on the back, most give tips on the best time to sow and how to propagate correctly.
I'd imagine most of the veggies you have listed could be grown in pots, the cress could probably be grown indoors on damp paper ??
Let us know if there are no instructions and I'll check my books for you.

| | | Re: Veg growing questions Hi Leon, I am growing all my veg in large buckets this year due to lack of space. I will take some photos and post them. In hanging baskets I am growing tomatoes and chillies. Some of the tomato plants were supermarket tomatoes I collected the seeds and grew them on, not bad free seeds and all have germinated. In large separate buckets I am growing Beef tomatoes,Chillies,Cabbage,Broad bean,Courgettes,Garlic, and in 10" pots I am growing radishes, spring onions,Leeks, Beetroot. In large buckets I am growing potatoes. So you can grow just about anything in pots as long as they get enough sun and you water and feed them. |

| | | Re: Veg growing questions Grrrrrrrr.......was just at the end of a long list of sowing instructions for each of the plants listed and the pooter crashes and lost the lot
The majority of these can be grown in pots, sowing around now. Will try and redo the list later for you.
The cress can be grown indoors, just put some kitchen towel in a container (I always use the old trays that tomatoes come in) and damp with water. Sow the seeds onto the paper and keep moist. They will germinate fairly quickly and can be harvested once about an inch or so high.
Pot wise it may be worth using trough type planters for the beetroot, lettuce etc as these are usually sown in rows. The tomatoes should be able to be grown in 9" pots but I will confirm this for you.
The capsicum (peppers) are usually grown in greenhouses but can survive outdoors if in a warm sunny position.
Will redo sowing instructions soon but you could also try a google search.

| | | Re: Veg growing questions Most of the seeds I grow I start them off on the windowsill and keep them moist. The beetroot I leave a gap about the size of my fist as they do not grow deep they don't need a large pot. But they all need about 18% degrees temperature to start them off. Keep them moist but not water logged. I use a tesco's resealable bag with the seed tray inside to act like a propagator and as soon as they have germinated remove the bag. The weather is warm so you could just leave the bag off they will take about 2 weeks to germinate on a warm sunny windowsill. Hope this helps Leon. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
