This is more or less the lowest part of the garden. The tree in the middle distance is a young ash on the edge of the drive.
It used to be very wet here - you can see that there was still some Common Reed last year. All these dry summers and winters have caused it to dry out.
The big patch of Blackthorn has encroached from the left in the last few years, and I'm undecided how to manage it, as the patch it has grown from is getting a bit old.
There is still plenty of Dogs Mercury.

| | | Re: WAB Members' Garden Photos Lovely forest henrya. Its just crying out for a pond. Those newts need somewhere to breed. Could you put a liner in there or would it end up floating on the top when it does eventually rain. |

Higher up the garden, and vulnerable to drying out because of the droughts we have had in recent years. (Wildone at least will recall my complaints about lack of rain!) In case you missed the post, counted 21 male and 25 female Great Crested last week, plus one each of Smooth Newt.
There used to be a pond at the right of the previous picture, but that has had little water in it for several years. Also, beyond the Ash tree I mentioned was another tiny pond. I may try and deepen this one - now that I don't have to go to work!
And you correctly diagnose the problem of floating liners, these all being water table ponds. (But at least I haven't got an elephant gun!)

I appreciate a garden like that needs a lot of discrete
hard work but it looks marvellous good for you

| | | Re: WAB Members' Garden Photos Well Henry. I think you have outdone all of us. Any serious wildlife person would crave for a garden like that. How you manage it though I would think is a lot harder than it looks.

John | It's had a lot of 'benign neglect' in the last few years since my meeting with white van man, but last year I started doing a bit more and now, of course, I hope to do a lot more.
I'll post some more pix tomorrow, but I'll wait till blossom time for the orchard pictures!
