Had shown Herman not finished.... just in case I mucked him up, had a go in making the picture a picture rather than an illustration sort of thing. Might have overworked it in places but it is a great way to learn about shading... not a lot shown but it is working slowly.
Martin .... still seeing lines.!!!

| | | Re: Hermit Crab You've done a marvelous job with the background!!
The ripples on the sand are terrific. Herman's habitat is very realistic and has a well-balanced composition (which is difficult to achieve).
I share your trepidation when it comes to adding backgrounds...I always feel like I'm taking this huge risk, but then I end up with the majority of my drawings having blank backgrounds...which can be a bit boring! |

Cheers,
Andestine | Thanks Andestine, as for the anemones I had a little book I was given and it had some rough pencil drawings of them so I sort of copied them and made the rest up as I went along. Fun when it was finished and a relief not to have ruined it. Now to find a supply of larger scratch boards these are only 6 x 9 inches or so.
Appreciated your comments as always.
Martin

Will be there again and leave a footprint or two... keep the fantastic work up and thank you for the kind words indeed ChrissyMarie.

The more I did the more I had to carry on.... as you said the balance was the important factor and then the last little ripples of the sand in the middle of the picture just to show ( or try to show ) the distance of the horizon.
Like you I have had blank or half filled horizon and many a picture in the bin as I have ruined it by lack or too much work of the background... as has been said by so many others in the past... "knowing when to stop". I had thought of doing a few shrimps in the odd place... enough was reached.
Thanks for your comments Theresa, appreciated.
