The Gimp is an excellent bit of software and it's free and as Dai says, does everyhting that Photoshop can do. It takes a bit of getting used to and has a steep learning curve but there are lots of free tutorials on the net you can use.

Just downloaded new version of paint.net which has 'dents' effect which gives a sort of effect like Martin's liquify. I had to do the moth in another layer tho as I can't mask bits out.(Or rather don't know how yet  )
Not as disturbing as Martins Funguys but I'm going to try a few more..
