How many people work in conservation in the UK?

Hello!

Does anyone happen to know how I could find out an estimate of how many people work in conservation in the UK?

I need it for some research that I am doing for my MSc.

Blimey now there's an ask!

My only guess would be to define what you mean by working in conservaton then asking the different organisations which'd be a nightmare as you already realise.

Maybe email 'conservation-jobs.com' or other job advertisers as they may have those kinds of statistics.

Then you get the individual private organisations, like where I am- I'm the only ranger working for my lot.

I hope someone else comes up with something helpfull.

May not be the most current data, but this RSPB document provides general FTE (Full Time Equivalent) employment numbers for UK conservation jobs: -

I have emailed the national statistics office and CJS - so hopefully they will be able to help. It is a bit of a tricky one, because I'm after info on ecologists, wardens, rangers etc at the conservation organisations as opposed to admin and finance staff.

Hopefully I won't have to call each one up and make a tally, but it might come to that!

Lantra has figures, but how they acquired them, god knows. You could also try Countryside Management Association.

Hi there,

Yup - I've managed to get hold of a Lantra report from 2006 that says the figure is 56,000. I've got a feeling the figure might include admin, finance people etc. I've contacted them directly to find out where they got the figure from - hopefully they will send me some kind of breakdown.

Have also emailed the Countryside Management Association - waiting to hear back.

Do ecological consultants and freelancers like myself count? If so, you might also try IEEM (Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management). Also academics working in conservation?

Hi – yes they would. Even though my actual research is aimed at people working for ‘nature conservation’ organisations such as Natural England...the Wildlife Trust...etc. Although I realise the definition of a ‘nature conservation organisation’ could be interpreted in a number of ways.
